Mega publisher Activision Blizzard has announced that it’s entering the crowded free-to-play battle royale video game market using its flagship Call of Duty franchise. The title, Call of Duty: Warzone, has launched for free across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
The launch of this free-to-play battle royale game includes 2 different game modes: Battle Royale, which pits 150 players against each other in squads of 3 with up to 150 players simultaneously, and Plunder, which is a competition of loot collecting across a massive map. The game includes a variety of vehicles and items on top of the series’ trademark first person shooting gameplay.
Other than Call of Duty’s signature game feel, one major aspect that sets Warzone’s Battle Royale mode apart from the likes of Apex Legends and Fortnite Battle Royale is the opportunity to come back from death after your first elimination. The mechanic, referred to as “The Gulag,” pits you against another killed player in a 1 versus 1 scenario. If you win, you respawn in the main game, and if you lose, your surviving team mates can accumulate money using the in-game Contracts and Cash systems in order to buy your respawn.
